Friendship. Purpose.
Something More.

Freemasonry brings people from different backgrounds together through shared values, lasting friendships and a commitment to making a difference.

At Phoenix, we also enjoy a shared passion for real ale, craft beer and good company. It's traditional Freemasonry, with a distinctive Phoenix personality.

Real people. Shared values. A warm welcome.
The simple explanation

So, what exactly is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest social and charitable organisations. Its traditions draw on the skills and symbolism of the stonemasons who built great churches, castles and cathedrals.

These days we aren't building stone walls. We're building friendships, encouraging one another to be the best we can be, and helping the communities around us. Lodge meetings include familiar routines, meaningful ceremonies and opportunities to enjoy each other's company.

It's not about your job, your background or who you know. It's about the sort of person you are — and the person you'd like to become.

What matters to Freemasons

Four Values. One Shared Outlook.

The United Grand Lodge of England describes four principles at the heart of modern Freemasonry.

Integrity

Doing the right thing, keeping our word and being someone others can rely upon.

Friendship

Meeting people we might never otherwise have met and forming genuine, lasting friendships.

Respect

Welcoming different perspectives and treating each other with dignity and understanding.

Service

Giving our time, support and resources to help others and strengthen our communities.

What happens at a Lodge meeting?

Tradition, Friendship & a Good Conversation.

Most meetings involve a little Lodge business, ceremonial work that helps explain Masonic values, and a chance to spend time with friends.

Afterwards, members often enjoy a meal together — known as the festive board. At Phoenix, our interest in real ale and craft beer makes that fellowship especially enjoyable.

Our Lodge meets five times a year, making room for family, work and life beyond Freemasonry.

Questions are welcome

A Few Things People Often Ask

Do I need to know a Freemason to enquire?

No. You can contact Phoenix directly, introduce yourself and ask any questions you have. We can explain the next steps without pressure.

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. Freemasonry is not a religion or a substitute for one. Under the United Grand Lodge of England, members are expected to have a belief in a Supreme Being; people from different faiths and backgrounds meet together.

Is Freemasonry secret?

Freemasonry is a longstanding organisation with public information about its values, charities and activities. Some ceremonies and modes of recognition are kept private, much as other organisations retain certain traditions for members.

Is it all formal meetings?

Not at all. Freemasonry includes friendships, dining, charitable work and social events. At Phoenix, real ale and craft beer form part of our distinctive special-interest identity.

Can partners and friends come along?

While Lodge ceremonies are for members and eligible visiting Freemasons, many social and charity occasions are open to partners, families and guests. Contact us about a particular event.
